This summer, we had the opportunity to spend some time with rescued farm animals. These encounters reminded us of the importance of our commitment to animal rights.
Each of them had their own personality, habits, preferences, social and familial connections... Like the turkey who enjoyed staying near the group of ducks but preferred to follow his "mom" during the morning food round and sleep away from the group; or the calf separated from his mother at birth who continued to call for her for weeks. All of them experience joy, affection, or sorrow. Each and every individual.
Free and without the purpose of serving our interests, they do not form a mass of depersonalized things. Yet, it's evident to everyone: we all notice the peculiarities of our dogs or cats. These companions with whom we live, we learn to know, understand, and love them. The dividing line between them and those who scream behind the slaughterhouses is nothing more than conceptual, derationalized.
We both became vegans for a very simple reason: we don't need to consume animal products. We believe it's unfair and shouldn't be taken for granted. It was a political choice at that time because we wanted to show that society was blind when it came to the treatment of animals. But the more we get to know those living in farms, the more our choice is reinforced by compassion today.
From now on, through Patate & Cornichon, we want to address subjects that matter to us. Because we love to think and question our little world without any preconceived notions.
Why now?
This is a complicated time for anti-speciesism, where traditional media focus on certain militant practices of the vegan movement rather than its intellectual basis. We believe this is a mistake and that issues related to justice for animals should have a more prominent place in the debate.
Beyond animal ethics, we also want to address broader topics such as philosophy, feminism, ecology, and many other things!
This doesn't undermine the importance of vegan recipes that are central to Patate & Cornichon. If we want to gradually advance these issues, it remains essential for us to offer solutions for veganizing our diets!
So, we hope you'll enjoy reading here too and sharing with us your thoughts on these subjects.
