The Ultimate Vegan Guide to Montreal
### Summer Vegan Guide to Montreal: Our Personal Favorites! Hey everyone! It’s summer, the season when all our French friends come to visit us in Quebec and everyone else messages us for our top vegan spots in Montreal. We absolutely love answering those sweet little messages, but they’re often not detailed enough, you know? With so many vegan restaurants, cafes, and shops here, we decided to make a nearly exhaustive list for you. Every place on this list has been personally tested by us. If you notice a place is missing, it’s simply because we haven’t been there yet! We’ve ranked these spots in order of our preference because the whole point is to share our favorites and guide you through this wave of vegan eateries! 😉 Of course, there are a few duds among the vegan spots in Montreal, so there will be some places we wouldn’t recommend. If you just want a list of all vegan businesses without our opinions, feel free to check out Happy Cow. 😉 #### Restaurants: First up, let us introduce you to the two BEST RESTAURANTS IN MONTREAL. We can't pick a favorite, so they both sit proudly at number 1: **1. Radis** - [Visit Website](https://restaurantradis.com/fr) - **Completely vegan** - One of the newest additions, open since just this year. Nestled in Mile-End, Radis is an adorable Italian eatery reminiscent of a quaint bistro with a chalkboard menu and comforting booths. The chef’s creations transport me to the south of Italy: flavorsome tomatoes, powerful fresh basil, and the creamiest homemade vegan mozzarella. Their creative menu stays true to traditional Italian cuisine, offering more than just pizza and spaghetti. Think arancini, fritto misto, and fresh tortiglioni. Totally worth a visit! **Price:** Around $50 per person if you want to fully indulge. **1. Sushi momo** - [Visit Website](https://www.sushimomo.ca/?lang=fr) - **Completely vegan** - This has been our top choice since it opened. We’ve celebrated most of our special occasions here and introduced all our families. They serve some of the best sushi in the world, perfectly balancing flavors and textures. Each bite is a delightful surprise. We recommend the sharing deal for the table to sample their best specialties. **Favorite Dishes:** - **3 Champions:** enoki, pleurote, portobello, shiba zuke, avocado, bubu araré, soy-truffle emulsion - **Geisha:** sweet tofu, rice paper, avocado, tempura, cucumber, marinated eggplants, green onion, lime emulsion, yuzu sauce **Price:** $32 per person (includes miso soup, shared appetizers, sushi selection, and a small dessert - no drinks). Portions are generous enough that we often have leftovers! --- **3. Umami Ramen** - [Visit Website](https://umamiramenmtl.com/) - **Completely vegan** - Located in Petite-Italie, Umami Ramen is perfect even if you’re not a ramen expert. The decor is lovely, and every dish is homemade, down to the noodles and tofu. The cocktails are great but pricey. Special mention to the tapas-style starters and the Okonomiyaki, a Japanese omelet that’s simply amazing! **Price:** Around $35 per person. **4. Lola Rosa** - [Visit Website](https://lolarosa.ca/) - **Recently became 100% vegan** - Probably the spot we visit the most! It’s delicious, hearty, affordable, and very satisfying. Their menu includes burgers (the Cajun burger is one of the best!), burritos, large salads, and veggie curries. The cocktails are okay. **Price:** Approximately $20 per person. **5. Antidote** - [Visit Website](https://www.goantidote.com/) - **Completely vegan** - The best in Hochelaga! Antidote offers a menu similar to Lola Rosa’s with burgers, tacos, salads, and cocktails. On weekends, they serve an impressive brunch menu featuring scrambled tofu, bagels with faux-smoked salmon, sausages, and potatoes. **Price:** Around $25 per person. **6. Le Mariachi** - A South Californian restaurant in Petite-Italie offering tacos, burritos, and loaded fries. The chorizo fries were excellent. The menu is limited, so it might not suit everyone. They have a small patio. **Price:** Around $30 per person. **7. Bloom Sushi** - [Visit Website](https://bloomsushi.com/fr/) - **Completely vegan** - Created in 2019 by the founders of Sushi Momo and LOV, Bloom’s menu is akin to Sushi Momo’s. The flavors and textures are spot-on as always, but it’s pricier and more Instagram-friendly, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. **Price:** Around $60 per person. **8. Café Tuyo** - [Visit Website](https://www.facebook.com/CafeTuyo/) - **Completely vegan** - Full disclosure, I was the chef here for two years, but it’s one of the cutest cafes in the city. They’re one of the very few cafes that are entirely vegan and zero waste, using only glass containers for takeaway. **Price:** Around $15 per person. **9. Birona Hummus Bar** - [Visit Website](https://www.bironahummus.com/) - **Has meat, vegetarian, and many vegan options** - Choose from various hummus recipes with delicious toppings, served with pita and coleslaw. Portions might be small for big eaters. Weekends feature a more generous brunch menu. **Price:** Around $30 per person. **10. Café Dei Campi** - [Visit Website](https://www.facebook.com/cafedeicampi) - **Vegetarian/Vegan** - A bit out of the way in Petite-Patrie, this cafe offers a rare selection of pastries beyond the usual cookies/muffins/brownies, like brioches, cannoli, and tarts. They also have sandwiches, small pizzas, and soups at reasonable prices. **Price:** Around $15 per person. **11. Résonance Café** - [Visit Website](http://www.resonancecafe.com/) - **Vegetarian/Vegan** - Cute cafe in Mile-End that hosts live music. I go there for a smoothie and chili when I’m in the area. The food is simple but never disappointing. Everything is vegan, but they do offer cow’s milk. **Price:** Around $15 per person. **12. Panthère Verte** - [Visit Website](https://panthereverte.com/en) - **Completely vegan** - The go-to falafel fast food chain in Montreal. Personally, I’m not a fan of their falafels but I visit for the pita burger, iced tea, and super crispy sweet potato fries. **Price:** Between $10 and $20 per person. **13. Veganation** - [Visit Website](https://www.veganationmtl.com/) - **Completely vegan** - A neighborhood cafe/restaurant near Parc Molson. They dish up “world” plates like jerk tofu, General Tao tofu, lasagna, Pad Thai, spaghetti, and fresh juices. Available on delivery apps. **Price:** Between $10 and $20 per person. **14. Mimi and Jones** - [Visit Website](https://www.facebook.com/mimiandjonesdiner/) - **Completely vegan** - An American diner-style restaurant with an ultra-comfort food menu of burgers, ravioli, milkshakes, etc. Love the decor. **15. ChuChai** - [Visit Website](https://www.chuchaimontmontreal.ca/) - **Completely vegan** - A high-end Thai restaurant known for its mock meats like faux duck, faux chicken, faux beef, and faux shrimp. It's nice but not mind-blowing, though the novelty of mock meats is fun! **Price:** Between $25 and $45 per person. **16. Gusta** - [Visit Website](https://gustafoods.com/) - **Completely vegan** - Vegan sausage factory located at the Jean Talon Market. Great for buying sausages to take home or enjoying hot dogs and burgers on-site. **Price:** Around $10 per person. **17. Sham** - [Visit Website](https://www.shammontreal.com/) - **Completely vegan** - A quick-service spot for shawarma, shish taouk, and burgers, often made with mock meats. They use Beyond Meat for their burgers - delicious with a good bun. **Price:** Around $15 per person. **18. Café Sao** - [Visit Website](https://www.facebook.com/cafesaomtl/) - **Vegetarian but offers cow’s milk** - Located near Parc Lafontaine, they serve good coffee, pastries, and simple lunch meals. **Price:** Around $15 per person. **19. Tendresse** - [Visit Website](https://bistrotendresse.com/) - **Completely vegan** - A fancy little bistro in the Village with classic yet reinvented dishes and great cocktails. We weren’t as impressed with the desserts. **Price:** About $35 per person. **20. A&W** - [Visit Website](https://web.aw.ca/en/home) - **Meat-based with vegan options** - Fast food chain ubiquitous in Quebec that offers a Beyond Meat burger. Request it without cheese and mayo (they'll add ketchup instead) to make it vegan. Great for a road trip pit stop! **Price:** About $10 per person. **21. Bowhead Pub** - [Visit Website](http://bowheadpub.com/) - **Completely vegan** - The only vegan pub in Montreal. Besides drinks, they serve hot dogs, burgers, mini pizzas, and ice cream sandwiches. It's good but nothing groundbreaking. The ambience and decor weren't our favorite. **Price:** Around $20 per person. **22. Resto Vego** - [Visit Website](http://restovego.ca/) - **Vegetarian/Vegan** - Centrally located near Berri station, this restaurant has a fast-food counter with pizzas, sandwiches, pastries, and a buffet upstairs. Simple but good, and perfect for a hassle-free lunch. **Price:** Between $15 and $30 per person. **23. Aux vivres** - [Visit Website](https://www.auxvivres.com/) - **Completely vegan** - Possibly the first vegan restaurant in Montreal. While it's popular, we think their dishes aren't the most flavorful. However, their brunch is worth trying, and they serve one of the best carrot cakes in town. **Price:** Around $20 per person. #### Dessert Spots for a Sweet Treat: - **Iconoglace**: [Visit Website](https://www.chocolatsfavoris.com/en) **(Half vegan options)** - Best vegan ice cream in Montreal! We go at least once a week. The menu changes often, keeping things exciting! - **Pâtisserie Zébulon** - **Completely vegan** - The best vegan patisserie in Montreal, hands down. Everything tastes amazing. I love their passion fruit entremet and cookie! - **Végâteau** - **Completely vegan** - Specialty in cupcakes and tarts, all gluten-free. While the cupcakes are delicious, the tarts can be a bit lacking due to a predominant coconut flavor. - **Swirl** - [Visit Website](https://www.swirlmtl.com/) **(Completely vegan)** - A charming shop for soft-serve ice cream. They offer a single flavor of ice cream and sorbet to mix as you wish. Everything is artisanal and made with seasonal fruit, but a bit too sweet for my taste. - **Chocolat favoris** - [Visit Website](https://www.chocolatsfavoris.com/en) **(Few vegan options)** - Although not primarily vegan, they have an incredible raspberry soft serve that tastes just like fresh raspberries. You can dip it in dark chocolate too! - **Croissant croissant** - [Visit Website](https://www.facebook.com/croissantcroissantmtl/) **(Few vegan options)** - This cafe offers some of the best vegan croissants and chocolate pastries. They have a wide selection of plant-based milk for their beverages, and their banana hot chocolate is highly recommended during winter. - **Hoche Glacé** - [Visit Website](https://www.facebook.com/hocheglace/) **(Vegetarian/Vegan)** - This small ice cream shop in Hochelaga offers the most extensive range of vegan ice cream flavors. #### Shops for Vegan Goods: - **Muscade** - [Visit Website](https://www.epiceriemuscade.ca/) - My personal business, hence the bias. Muscade is a vegan zero-waste store with a food section, a boutique area, a coffee corner with my pastries, and a fridge with my jarred recipes (yogurt, cheese, prepared meals, jams, sauces). Be sure to drop by! - **Herbivores** - [Visit Website](https://www.facebook.com/HerbivoresMTL/) - Completely vegan grocery store offering the best of vegan products (cheese, sausages, mock meats, marshmallows, ice cream, egg substitutes, frozen pizzas, pet food, Beyond Meat steaks in bulk). They also have fast food options prepared on-site. - **BKIND** - [Visit Website](https://fr.bkind.com/) - Vegan cosmetic shop with a zero-waste focus. They offer a variety of body, face, hair, and bath products, plus accessories. Perfect for gifts! - **Matt & Nat** - [Visit Website](https://mattandnat.com/) - Vegan leather goods brand, especially known for their handbags available at various retailers across Montreal. - **Zone libre** - [Visit Website](http://www.zonelibre.ca/) - An independent and activist bookstore with well-stocked sections on humanities, philosophy, environment, animal ethics, and feminism. They occasionally host talks on these topics. - **Le port de tête** - [Visit Website](https://leportdetete.leslibraires.ca/) - Independent bookstore near Mont-Royal metro. It’s split into two stores, one focusing on social sciences and philosophy, with extensive sections on feminism, LGBTQIA+, and animal ethics. We visit almost every weekend!
