Creamy Butter Tofu

I discovered this dish quite recently because the name didn't inspire me when I saw it on the menu at Indian restaurants. I had the impression that the tofu would be swimming in butter 😅 Not at all! This Indian dish (originally butter chicken) is actually made of grilled tofu, cooked in a creamy tomato sauce with ginger, garlic, and lots of spices like turmeric, garam masala... and it's served over basmati rice! I highly recommend pairing it with a homemade naan, it's wonderful with it!

  • -soy sauce 60 (mL)
  • -Crushed tomatoes 80 (mL)
  • -soy cream 250 (mL)
  • -vegan sour cream 125 (mL)
  • -basmati rice 130 (g)
  • -firm tofu 250 (g)
  • -cornstarch 20 (g)
  • -fresh ginger 12 (g)
  • -garlic 1 (clove)
  • -onion 1
  • -plant-based margarine 40 (g)
spices
  • -garam masala 0.5 (tsp)
  • -cayenne pepper 0.5 (tsp)
  • -turmeric powder 1 (tsp)
  • -coriander powder 0.5 (tsp)
  • -cumin 1 (tsp)

  • In a pot of water, cook the rice for about 18 minutes, then drain it.
  • In the meantime, prepare the tofu: tear it into small pieces and mix them with the cornstarch.
  • Peel and finely chop the ginger, garlic, and onion.
  • In a frying pan, heat the margarine over high heat. Sauté the ginger, garlic, and onion for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the tofu and grill for about ten minutes until golden brown.
  • In the meantime: thinly slice the green onion, set aside.
  • Add the spices to the pan, then pour in the soy sauce, crushed tomatoes, and 60 mL of water. Remove from heat and add the soy cream.
  • Serve the buttered tofu with basmati rice and sour cream, adding a sprinkle of minced green onion on top.

NotesProducts used: the sour cream can be replaced with plain soy yogurt. I use Nuvel, Becel, or LeGrand margarine. Soyarie brand firm tofu (half a block is enough for this recipe). Soy sauce can be replaced with tamari.
