Marinated Turnip and Green Apple Makis

Yep, this time we didn't put any mango or avocado in our makis, not even a small piece... nope, nothing at all! We've prepared a slightly more...original recipe for you: marinated turnip with lemon and green apple :-D It might seem a bit weird to you, but we promise, it's super delicious!

Plus, it gives you a recipe idea for after summer, when you're not quite sure what to eat ;-) It'll be apple and turnip season, isn't that great?

That day, we also marinated some mushrooms as a nice little variation ;-)

  • -rice vinegar 4 (tbsp)
  • -sugar 2 (tbsp)
  • -salt 2 (tsp)
  • -nori sheets 7
  • -turnips 2
  • -granny smith apple 1
  • -olive oil 100 (mL)
  • -lemon 1
  • -sushi rice 400 (g)

  • Peel the turnips and cut them into thin sticks. Marinate them with the olive oil, the lemon juice, and a pinch of salt.
  • Rinse the sushi rice with cold water, drain, and repeat this process 3-4 times.
  • Pour the rice into a saucepan and cover with water. Cook covered until the water has completely evaporated and the rice is cooked.
  • Turn off the heat and leave the lid on for another 10 minutes. Mix the vinegar, sugar, and salt and add the seasoning to the rice. Using a spatula, fan the rice to cool it down and place it in the fridge.
  • Wash the apple and slice it into thin pieces.
  • To form your makis, place a thin layer of rice on a sheet of nori (covering 3/4 of the sheet's length and 3mm in thickness). Then, place marinated turnip slices and apple at 1/4 of the sheet's length. Roll everything together to create a sushi roll.
  • Repeat the process for all the nori sheets and then cut each roll into 6 pieces. It's ready!
